Pop goes GLC decibel dosage
Most rock concerts
soon could be banned because they are too loud. Next month
the Greater London Council public services committee will
discuss a code of practice for indoor events based on the
Department of Enviroment's noise code for industrial workers.
An experiment described in today's edition of New Scientist
shows that one concert by the group Fumble exceeded the permitted
daily decibel dose by 234 per cent. To comply with the code
the concert would have had to stop after 17 minutes.
Although it is not clear that music can be equated with industrial
noise the Noise Advisory Council has suggested that people
working in discos should be provided with ear protection.
